More Than Music Lessons. A Lifetime of Musicianship.

Music lessons for kids, teens, and adults in Germantown and Collierville, TN.

At Music Box, we believe music is more than a skill to master. It's a language to understand, a creative outlet to explore, and a lifelong source of confidence, connection, and personal growth.

That's why we do more than teach students how to play an instrument or sing a song. We teach them how to understand music, express themselves, collaborate with others, and become independent musicians.

Our approach combines the strong foundations of traditional music education with the creativity, relevance, technology, and performance opportunities of contemporary music programs.

Whether you're discovering music for the first time, returning to an instrument after years away, or working toward advanced musical goals, Music Box gives you the tools, guidance, and opportunities to grow.

We Teach Music as a Language

Don't just learn what to play. Understand what you're playing.

Think about how we learn to speak. We listen, imitate, experiment, make mistakes, communicate, and gradually learn to read and write.

We believe learning music should follow a similarly natural and meaningful process.

At Music Box, students develop five interconnected musical skills:

Listen

Develop your musical ear, recognize patterns, and understand what you hear.

Read

Learn notation, rhythm, & the language musicians use to communicate.

Write

Explore composition, songwriting, & musical ideas of your own.

Improvise

Learn to make musical decisions, respond, & express yourself creatively.

Perform

Build confidence, connect with an audience, and share your musical voice with others.

These skills reinforce one another. A student who can read music, recognize patterns by ear, understand harmony, and improvise has more freedom than someone who only memorizes where to put their fingers.

Our goal is musical fluency, not simply song memorization.

A Teaching Method Built Around How People Learn

Meaningful learning. The right challenges. Progress that lasts.

Our educational philosophy draws inspiration from research in learning, language acquisition, and growth mindset.

Rather than overwhelming students with information or relying exclusively on repetition, our educators build understanding through carefully sequenced experiences.

Learning Through Understanding

We introduce new concepts through familiar musical patterns, songs, listening, demonstrations, and guided practice. Students connect what they already know with what they're ready to learn next.

The Right Level of Challenge

Our structured curriculum allows educators to meet students where they are and gradually introduce more complex skills. We want learning to be challenging enough to encourage growth without becoming unnecessarily frustrating.

Confidence Before Perfection

Mistakes are a natural part of learning. We encourage students to experiment, ask questions, take creative risks, and develop the confidence to keep trying.

Repetition With Purpose

Important skills return throughout the curriculum in increasingly sophisticated ways. A rhythm learned as a beginner may later become part of an improvisation, a composition, or a live band performance.

Our approach is influenced by principles of comprehensible input and low anxiety  learning associated with language acquisition researcher Stephen Krashen, adapted thoughtfully to music education.

We combine these ideas with the growth mindset principle that abilities can develop through effective strategies, practice, feedback, and persistence.

We don't expect every student to learn at the same speed. We expect every student to have the opportunity to grow.

The Best of Traditional and Contemporary Music Education

A complete musical education without having to choose between structure and creativity.

Many families wonder whether they should choose classical lessons, a rock-band-focused school, or a private music teacher.

These approaches can all offer valuable experiences. The difference lies in which musical skills are emphasized and how they're connected.

At Music Box, we believe students benefit from a broader approach.

Educational approach

- Traditional or classical instruction

- Performance-centered rock programs

- Informal song-based lessons

- The Music Box approach

Typical emphasis

  • - Technique, notation, interpretation, and established repertoire

    - Song learning, rehearsals, ensemble playing, and live performance

  • - Favorite songs, chords, and immediate playing goals

  • - Reading, technique, ear training, theory, improvisation, composition, technology, collaboration, and performance within a structured curriculum

These are general descriptions, not evaluations of individual schools. Programs and instructors vary, and many teach skills beyond their primary emphasis.

We believe musical literacy and creativity belong together.

A student can learn to play a favorite pop or rock song while understanding the chord progression, reading the rhythm, identifying the musical form, and experimenting with an original solo.

A student studying classical piano can also explore jazz harmony, contemporary repertoire, composition, and ensemble playing.

At Music Box, musical styles are not boundaries. They're opportunities to learn.

Structured Curriculum. Personalized Learning.

A clear path forward, with room for individuality.

Music Box combines the personal attention of individual instruction with the consistency of an organized educational program.

Students follow a progressive, level-based curriculum designed to develop essential musical skills over time.

Our teachers personalize repertoire, pacing, and learning strategies to the student's abilities, interests, and goals, while maintaining a consistent educational foundation.

How progress works at Music Box

  • Discover: Identify the student's current abilities, interests, and goals.

  • Develop: Build skills through weekly lessons, guided practice, and musical exploration.

  • Apply: Use new knowledge in songs, improvisation, creative projects, and performances.

  • Demonstrate: Show understanding through level assessments and performance experiences.

  • Advance: Celebrate progress and mov toward new musical challenges.

Our teachers use shared curricula and learning resources, making it easier to maintain continuity as students progress, explore additional instruments, or work with different educators.

We also provide digital learning tools, lesson notes, and progress updates to help students and families understand what's being learned and what comes next.

Progress isn't measured only by how many songs a student knows. It's measured by what the student can understand, create, and do independently.

Performance Is Part of the Learning Process

From the lesson room to the stage and beyond.

At Music Box, performance isn't something students wait years to experience.

It's an essential part of learning to communicate through music.

Our monthly Performance Workshops provide a supportive setting where students can practice performing, listening to others, managing nerves, and developing stage presence.

As they grow, students may have opportunities to participate in bands, community events, festivals, and other live performances.

These experiences develop much more than musical technique. Students practice preparation, responsibility, adaptability, teamwork, and communication.

They discover that confidence doesn't require perfection, it develops through preparation,  experience, and  the willingness to try.

And while performing is encouraged, we respect each student's readiness and individual goals.

A Growth Mindset That Goes Beyond Music

What students learn about themselves matters just as much as what they learn about music.

We believe talent is a starting point, not a limit.

At Music Box, we encourage students to focus on improvement, effort, effective practice, curiosity, and the ability to overcome challenges.

Instead of thinking, "I'm not good at this," we help students learn to ask, "What strategy could help me improve?"

Instead of treating a mistake as failure, we use it as feedback.

Instead of comparing students to one another, we recognize individual growth.

These habits can carry into school, relationships, careers, and other areas of life.

Music gives students an opportunity to practice patience, persistence, creative thinking, self-expression, and collaboration in ways that are both challenging and rewarding.

Our goal is not simply to build better musicians. It's to help people become more confident, curious, capable learners.

Local Roots. A Bigger Musical World.

Family-owned, community-connected, and committed to music education.

Music Box is a family-owned music school serving Germantown, Collierville, Memphis, and surrounding communities.

Our educational philosophy reflects years of international music education experience, a passion for contemporary and traditional musicianship, and a commitment to making music education meaningful.

We believe a music school should be more than a place students visit once a week.

It should be a community where students feel welcome, teachers continue developing professionally, families celebrate progress, and musicians have opportunities to contribute beyond the classroom.

From local performances and festivals to community partnerships and service opportunities, we encourage students to discover how music can bring people together.

We are proud to be part of the Mid-South music community and even prouder to help the next generation of musicians find their voice.

What Success Looks Like at Music Box

I can play.

Build skills and musical confidence.

I understand.

Recognize patterns and make musical decisions.

I can create.

Express ideas and make music independently.

The destination isn't one performance, one exam, or one song. It's a lifetime of musical possibilities.

“I would not be where I am in music today without Alex Ovando.

I began playing guitar in 2007 at age 12. I didn’t have prior experience as an instrumentalist, but Alex quickly picked up on my desire to improve and helped set me on the path to get there. Alex introduced me to many artists who formed the backbone of my musical influences. He lent me gear to play my very first shows and was always open to hearing my ideas. I produced my first recording with Alex.

I really appreciate that Alex saw something in me, but also that he had the wisdom as a teacher to cultivate a path that would allow me to discover my passion and develop it. As someone who has experienced music education up to the collegiate level, Alex stands in a place that many do not occupy—that of truly engaging with the student and tailoring his approach to their needs.

Alex set me on the path to get the top chair in the All-West Tennessee Jazz Band twice, to get a full ride to Thornton School of Music at USC, and to have a self-sustaining career in music now. I am currently a musical director, producer, and guitarist and just played my first Coachella on the main stage. I have gone on 3 national tours, played 8 major music festivals and been on national TV twice at the age of 24. Songs I have produced have over 55 million combined streams online. I would not have gotten there without the guidance and advice of my instructor and friend, Alex Ovando.”

— Derek Renfroe, former guitar student
